However, since (a) I am already running the latest BIOS, (b) I have been running the machine for 9 months without the noise, (c) the noise started without any changes being made to the BIOS (including any Smart CPU function) or power management options and (d) the noise occurs whether or not I have a USB device connected, I am not terribly confident that those suggestions will cure the problem. Obviously I will follow those suggestions to the letter, to do otherwise would be pointless. I appreciate Karell's help and am grateful for the time taken considering my problem - hence I thanked Karell. I said I would try out Karell's suggestions, and I will do. The noise does not appear to happen in Dell diagnostic mode, but tinkering with msconfig does not seem to help. It sounds like maybe a component repeatedly trying to run a sequence or something (though that's just ignorant speculation). It recurs regularly about every four or six seconds. It comes from the fan vent, but it goes on even when the fan is still. It's quite a quiet noise, but when you're sitting in a quiet room trying to work it becomes steadily more noticeable until you want to bite your own hand off in frustration. The noise sounds quite like a night-time insect sound rendered by a computer, or an electronic card shuffle. About nine months on, my D800 is doing it again. Dell tech could not explain it, and eventually replaced the machine. Shortly after I first got my D800 (quite a while ago) it started making a funny noise. I will be deeply indebted to anybody who might be able to explain it to me. This is a tough one to describe, but it's driving me so crazy I just have to try.
